Over the past two weeks, 2M has been focused on developing problem solving strategies. We have nine main strategies for solving small problems; larger problems require help from an adult. The strategies include: walk away, ignore, share and take turns, talk it out, go to another game, wait and cool off, make a deal, apologize, and tell them to stop.
In the pictures above, students create two sections of the problem solving wheel. One of my favorite parts of second grade is the biography unit. We kick off the unit in February with whole-class read alouds and guided reading groups focused on biographies. Then, students practice taking notefacts, categorizing their learning, and identifying the important details through a whole-class biography study. Once students have learned the steps to research, they are ready for to pursue their own interests. Last week we started our interest groups. This year's groups are: Neil Armstrong, Helen Keller, Martin Luther King, and George Washington.
