In second grade, students have choice time once a week. So far we have learned about four choices: pattern blocks, 3-d shapes, reading, and drawing. Here are some pictures from this week's choice time.

Fridays always end with Closing Circle. During Closing Circle, we brainstorm our new learning from the week. Then, students and teachers share one piece of learning they are proud of from the week.
Last week we stared our map unit! We have been exploring different types of maps, reading books about geography, and illustrating poems. Ask your second grader more about the pictures from the week. This week we learned a new writing center option, writing letters. Here we are writing letters to Mo Willems. Last week, we began to discover new areas of our classroom! When we open an area of our classroom, we complete a guided discovery. First, students make predictions about what material we are discovering, by squeezing and shaking the materials while they are hidden in the “magic bag.” Then, during the guided discovery, students are introduced to materials and have an opportunity to work with materials in an open-ended format. For example, in a math guided discovery, students worked with pattern blocks, first brainstorming how they used pattern blocks in the past and then creating towers, designs, and patterns with the materials.
Each week students respond to a different poem. Poems connect to the thematic unit we are studying, which is usually a science or social studies unit. Right now, we are focusing on building the classroom community. As such, our poems connect to the beginning of the school year.
We had a great first week back to school! We learned so much in two days. Check out all of our new learning!
