To support our science unit on nutrition, students have been reading and responding to poems about the food groups. Here is a poem about fruits and vegetables.
We started our Flat Stanley project! Students measured Flat Stanley, decorated his shirt with a repeating pattern, and folded up Flat Stanley to prepare him for his trip. 2M students are encouraged to mail their Flat Stanley's to friends and relatives around the country and the world! On Friday, all three classes of second graders went on a nature walk to Leverett Pond. Students worked with peers from other second grade classrooms to make observations and record their thinking in their science notebooks.
We began our science curriculum by asking the question, "What is a scientist?" After a whole-class conversation, students recorded their own ideas in pictures and words. This was the first entry in our science journals.
We continue to devote time each day to reading picture books and chapter books. As part of our unit on mapping, we have read Mapping Penny's World, My Map Book, As the Crow Flies, Treasure Map, and Where Do I Live. Content area read alouds build background knowledge and vocabulary. They also provide opportunities for many connections to the curriculum. We record all of our whole-class read alouds in a reading log, just as students do during reading workshop.
As you may know, Lincoln's Spanish teacher, Beth Trach, has a detailed Spanish blog. This blog documents Spanish learning in K-4 throughout the year.
Thank you to all of the 2M families for a great open house! It was wonderful to see familiar faces and meet new parents as well. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
