Last week, we began to discover new areas of our classroom! When we open an area of our classroom, we complete a guided discovery. First, students make predictions about what material we are discovering, by squeezing and shaking the materials while they are hidden in the “magic bag.” Then, during the guided discovery, students are introduced to materials and have an opportunity to work with materials in an open-ended format. For example, in a math guided discovery, students worked with pattern blocks, first brainstorming how they used pattern blocks in the past and then creating towers, designs, and patterns with the materials.
